I suspect this is wrong, but I like the reasoning so I'll give it a go anyway.
The answers I'm suggesting is Kipps.
Smoked fish could be kippers - take away her majesty (er) and that leaves Kipps - the novel which was the basis of the musical 'Half A Sixpence' which could be the three old pence mentioned in the clue.
