Some clues:

This band's biggest UK hit single was in 1990. They had a lesser hit circa 2001, with the theme tune from a TV show.

For a long time, they were a duo, but are now a five-piece.

2001 sounds about right for the beginning of Malcolm in the Middle, and the alphabet song sounds like it could be the ABCs of the World, so I'm thinking the group you're looking for is They Might be Giants.
