Rochester Grand Prix 2013

Our next Quizzing.co.uk Grand Prix takes place at The Vines, Rochester, Kent on 6 July 2013. Around 60 to 70 of the country's top quizzers are expected to assemble there for individual and team events. The venue is within easy walking distance of Rochester train station, itself just 40 minutes from central London.

After the main event concludes, we will repair to a friendly real-ale hostelry, The Good Intent which in past years has been the scene of a great evening's après Grand Prix quizzing. Once again we can expect a room to ourselves and the quiz buzzers will come out to keep us occupied between beverages.

Our venue (post-code ME1 1XN) The Vines, United Reformed Church, is next door to Restoration House where Charles II spent his first night in the country after his final return from exile (by way of curious juxtaposition it was also once owned by Rod Hull). Please note: our venue is the more recent extension at the REAR of the original, more "Gothic-looking" church building. Also, the original building fronts on to Crow Lane, but there is only PEDESTRIAN access from that road - for vehicular access, folk MUST arrive via Victoria Street and The Terrace. In any event, the route for cars, being on the right side of the building for Rochester train station, is likely the best one for use by pedestrians also!

The Vines (note: United Reformed Church, NOT a nearby park of the same name) sits slap bang in the middle of historic Rochester. The city boasts a fabulous and historically important Norman castle, and a fine cathedral. The city has close links to Charles Dickens and in neighbouring Chatham there's also the historic dockyards, Fort Amherst, and the Royal Engineers museum at Brompton to see.

We are very grateful to Ken Owen for organising this venue for us, and much more. He has also made arrangements with The Good Intent - a past winner of Medway CAMRA's "Pub of the Year" - for us to take over the whole of one of their rooms for the Saturday evening. We are also going to arrange an Indian meal (£8 each) the choice being a mild or medium meat or a vegetable curry. To this end we could do with as early indication as possible on numbers. So, if you plan to attend, please visit the relevant thread in this forum let us know a.s.a.p. if you want a meat (mild or medium) or vegetarian curry!

Directions to venue

Anyone requiring help with directions, whether travelling by road or rail, please drop me a line (e-mail or PM) and I will forward you a copy of Ken's very carefully prepared and marvelously detailed instructions, complete with photos to place instructions/directions in visual context!

Accommodation

There is a variety of choice from simple B&B to four-star spa hotel with pool. There is also a Premier Inn in Strood, some 5 minutes or so drive from the venue. The B&Bs in and around Rochester’s Watts Avenue are maybe 300 yards from the venue (and look even closer if walking back from The Good Intent pub later on). The St George Hotel (about 800 yards walk further on than the Medway Manor Hotel) is perhaps within 15 minutes walk, depending on how you are walking uphill (there’s a steep hill to climb before the road levels out on New Road Avenue). Both the Holiday Inn and Bridgewood Manor are 3 miles or so from the venue, along the Maidstone Road, in the direction of Junction 3 of the M2.

Here are yesterday's results. Our thanks again to Ken Owen for being such a wonderful host - daytime AND evening - to Dave Bill for a VERY entertaining set, chock-full of nuggets, and to road-testers Didier Bruyere, Nic Paul, and Pat Gibson.

Thanks to all the participants for such a wonderful turnout - including 10 debutantes! And personal thank-yous to Iain Thoms, for helping input all that data into the spreadsheet, and to the guys from the North East (Keith Marshall, Barry Howbridge, Dave Taylor, and Mike Foden), Andrew Teale, and Kevin Ashman, for helping Ken set the room up on Friday evening!
