MindSweep - May 15th 2016 - Results

Postby Chris » Fri May 20, 2016 4:41 pm

I am pleased to share the following message, received from Arul Mani at the KQA in Bangalore, and add our own support for the expressions of gratitude offered to KQA for another splendid quiz.

"Pat Gibson wins MindSweep 2016 with a score of 145 out of a possible 220. Anne Hegerty finishes second with 133, also the best performance by a woman quizzer. Andy Tucker, also of the UK, finishes third with 128.

Among the categories, Gibson won Sciences and Social Sciences outright with identical scores of 39. Anne Hegerty won Arts with a score of 37. Four people tied for top spot in Living with 32 points each: Pat Gibson, Andy Tucker, Santosh Swaminathan and Rajiv Rai.

Three Indian quizzers finished in the top 10 (not counting Ujjwal Deb, who took the quiz in Eindhoven), They are Vinoo Sanjay (113), Jayashree Mohanka (112) and Swaminathan G (111). Aadisht Khanna (110) finished 11th.

The setters thank all those who took MindSweep 2016 for generously giving up several hours of a Sunday morning for the quiz. Thanks go out to the various clubs and associations across the world that collaborated with us in holding the quiz.

In Bangalore, fifty three quizzers turned up on Sunday, 15 May 2016, to attempt the fifth edition of MindSweep, KQA’s international quiz contest. Due to traffic restrictions on the day (the venue being bang in the middle of the route assigned to those taking some lugubriously long run or the other), we began later than scheduled.

The top five scores in the Open category were as follows:
 Avinash Thirumalai aka Gajju: 102
 Santosh Swaminathan & Arun Hiregange tied for second place: 99
 Anustup Datta: 98
 Thejaswi Udupa: 97

Category Winners:
 Arts: Santosh Swaminathan (31)
 Sciences: Avinash Thirumalai (33)
 Social Sciences: Suresh Ramasubramanian & Krittika Adhikary (24 each)
 Living: Santosh Swaminathan (32-also joint winner worldwide)

School Winners:
Hari Karthik of St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School won the School category with 30 points. Amrit Sodhi, from the same school, finished second with 11 points.

College Winners:
Shreyas Karanth won the College category in Bangalore with a score of 49 points. Rishiraj and Balaji S. made 45 points apiece to jointly take the runner-up position.

Women Winners:
While people have various opinions about prizes for women contestants, it has been KQA’s policy to announce such prizes since Wing Commander Mulky’s days at the helm. This is an effort to make visible the participation that quizzing draws from women, however small that may be, and thus to elicit greater participation. We congratulate Krittika Adhikary who made 71, top-scored in the Social Sciences in Bangalore, and finished 48th internationally. Thejaswi P., not to be mistaken for the world-famous Udupa, finished second with 29 points. We had five participants, all told.

This is also perhaps the best place to congratulate a school quizzer named Abhirami Girish, of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Perumthiruthi (Kozhikode). She scored 54 points, top-scoring thus across the Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram centres in Kerala, and finished 77th internationally.
