1 February 2014: Edinburgh Grand Prix DETAILS

Postby Chris » Mon Jan 13, 2014 12:42 am

We are delighted that the BQA's Grand Prix circuit will be making its long overdue debut north of the border, in Edinburgh, on 1 February 2014. We are most grateful to Ewan McNaught for putting the concert room at his club at our disposal for this event and look forward to a number of people making the trip north to meet with the growing band of Scots quizzers who gather every month to take the Hot 100 quiz.

Attendees in Edinburgh will note the slightly later start time. We're delaying things by 15 minutes so that our timetable dovetails better with the arrival times of trains coming into Waverley Station from south of the border.

Note: details of the alternative venue in Flitwick, Beds. - for those unable to get up to Edinburgh, but who are keen not to lose ground vis a vis domestic and world rankings points - will follow shortly.

Edinburgh Venue
The Voodoo Rooms,
19a West Register Street,
Edinburgh EH2 2AA.

Schedule
11.15 Registration
11.45 Grand Prix Individual Quiz
13.15 Marking
14.00 Luncheon - included in price*
15.00 Hot 100 (45 minute individual quiz, + marking)
16.00 Fun Team Quiz (ad hoc teams drawn-up by quiz master)
17.30 Prizes and then close of official event circa 17.45.

18.45 Visit to curry house (paid for separately, details included here for info only)
Addendum: due to the numbers planning to attend for the curry, the restaurant has asked us to move our meal booking slot to 6.45-8.30. Hopefully this does not inconvenience anyone. The meal will be a set party menu [see here] and is enigmatically priced at £19.47 a head.

* People with particular dietary requirements might like to make alternative lunch arrangements. If they contact me in advance we can agree a suitable discount on their admission cost.

Cost:
£25 all day, unless you are making your debut, in which case it's £12.50 (see note below).
£4 Hot 100 only
£10 Hot 100 and team quiz

For the purposes of quizzers resident north of the border, you'll be classed as making your debut if you have never attended a GP before AND you have yet to participate in TWO or more World/European Championship Quiz events. This effectively brings the Scots into line with the rules as they have applied to other GP debutantes in areas where the circuit has been operating now for many years.

Please note that an Edinburgh sign-up thread has been created. If appropriate to you, please visit the sign up thread and post there to indicate that are attending the Edinburgh venue. Please also indicate if you plan to join the group going for a curry in the evening. See note earlier in this posting re people with special dietary requirements. Thanks!

Many thanks to everyone who turned out for yesterday's twin-site event, particularly the two dozen denizens of the South who made the trip north of the border to Edinburgh. Everyone who did so was rewarded with a very warm welcome and lovely hospitality from Ewan, Brian and their fellow Scots (and one or two Irish residents also!). It was also gratifying to see the laurels shared by quizzers at both sites, and especially splendid to see a debut genre win for Stuart Finlayson!

My personal thanks once again to our host Ewan McNaught. I'm looking forward to 2015 already!

The (corrected) results follow... we had 101 people attempt the quiz. I believe one person at each venue chose (as is their right) not to submit their scores, hence the results show only 99 people.
