Which children's series featured a crime-fighting magician - driving an E-type early on, later in a Porsche 914?

No takers? OK, it was Ace of Wands, from the early 70's. Was I the only one doing my homework in front of the telly?

Try this one. A detective started driving a Lancia, but the car was different when the stories were first televised and this car was adopted in the later books.

The name of the detective is the name of the TV series, who is this?

No, he drove a Hirondelle in the books. Which does not exist.

I think I've found the answer, although my eyes hardly believe it.

Inspector Morse.

I am having trouble imagining Morse in anything other than the Jag.

Correct - the first episode (Dead of Jericho) involved Morse's car being crashed into, twice, and there seemed to be no semi-expendable Lancias available, so they used 248 RPA, an old stunt car. Which they spent the next 30-odd episodes trying to get it to start, or pushing it if necessary.

The car later had a full restoration, and was auctioned for big money.

Over to you.

Thankyou.
This may be a bit of a chestnut question but...
Keeping with the vehicular theme, which TV character had a car called Bessie?
