Who promised to quit the movie industry after Roy Kinnear's death in 1988 and apart from a music documentary that was already in the pipeline has kept their word?

As a guess, since Roy Kinnear died making one of his films, was it Richard Lester?

I don't know about the second and last but the first and third are films about the making of a film.

In Day for Night which very famous British author was given a small role as a not very famous insurance executive without Truffaut being told who he was?
