Quest British Open Grand Prix - 2 December 2017

Postby Chris » Sat Dec 02, 2017 4:10 pm

We have almost all the UK-based Grand Prix scores in now, and what we have is up online, HERE (right click and chose 'open in new tab'). The results will update automatically as the rest of the scores - including all those of our friends overseas - as they are entered into Quest by proctors.

We were delighted once again to see such a good turnout for this, our third major quiz event in just 29 days, and in the run-up to Christmas! Just four weeks ago we had our first ever November GP and then a week later around 50 of our UK quizzers and administrators were in Zagreb for the European Quizzing Championships.

We were pleased to see so many good scores, with at least 40 through the magic “100 points total” barrier and, <drumroll>, our first ever MAXIMIUM score on a genre – Kevin Ashman managing to completely ace the Entertainment genre with a score of 30.10 (i.e. every one of the 40 questions). We congratulate Kevin on this amazing feat – the first such score since the 30+10 tiebreaker was introduced nearly 10 years ago. We also note the incredibly close, high finish in Lifestyle (traditionally the toughest genre in scoring terms), with three players reaching 26 and then separated by just three tiebreakers.

So, we heartily congratulate Kevin on his amazing Entertainment score and on his overall winning score of 134.7, ahead of Pat Gibson (133.5), and Didier Bruyère (130.2). Fourth place was taken by Steve Cook with what was, I believe, his best ever finish, scoring 127.6 (and taking the Physical World genre, 26.2) and in fifth place in a field of circa 170 was Mark Grant on 127.1. Well done all!

Here are the medal positions, by genre.

Many thanks to all competitors, and of course to proctors - for your continued support/help. We also send special thanks to question contributors Eric Kilby (Entertainment) and Keith Andrew (Sport & Games), and of course to Jane and Diana who as usual lent invaluable support with editing and verification. And as we approach the end of another calendar year, we say thanks again to everyone who has helped with the supply of questions this year, and to those who have helped out at events (and a special thanks and “get well” to Sara Head xxx).

You can view the results by following the link. Once again, thanks all for taking part and for supporting/facilitating the event. We hope to see you in Coventry/Edinburgh on 6 January 2018!

All the best
